Both the acai palm and the acai berry are native to the swamps and floodplains that grow in the regions of Central and South America. In the native language acai translates to ‘fruit that cries or expels water’ and the acai fruit fits the description completely. The acai berry is not a fresh part of the diet for the tribes in the regions of Brazil.  It always took up a large part of their diets.  Nevertheless, now that the berry is in extraordinary demand worldwide, the acai palm is also being cultivated in this region of the world.

Although the acai berry look a lot like grapes, they have  a lesser amount of pulp and are a great deal smaller than grapes.  They are green or dark purple in color, depending on species and maturity, and hang in bunches of 500 to 900 fruit. The large seed takes up very nearly 80% of the total fruit by capacity and it is covered by a exceptionally slim layer of pulp. The berry is thought to be a food by itself and is taken salty or sweet depending on what has been mixed with it and as per local as well as individual preferences. The pulp and juice of the acai berry are very versatile and are used in the countries of South America to enhance many goods like granola or ice cream. The growth in demand for the berry came about because of these inventive uses and its recent advertising promotion as a dietary supplement – in the kind of instant drinking powder, juice, tablets, etc.

Even though marketers promote acai berries as a wonder fruit with elevated fiber content, capable of producing increased libido, heart health, skin appearance, enhanced digestion, heightened energy levels, reduced cholesterol, etc., there have been no independent scientific studies confirming any of these claims. There have been many complaints from consumers that the manufacturers and retailers are scamming them and even though they have applied for refunds at some stage in the free trial period, the consumers are being rejected. So it is prudent that prospective purchasers of this product consider their options warily before taking a determination to go for it or not. When you look at all of the information jointly, it is evident that the acai berry is litter more than ordinary in comparison to other fruits in terms of nutritional content, anti-oxidant levels, and necessary vitamin content.  Whatever little scientific studies have been conducted has exposed the berry in some of the forms mentioned in the previous paragraph works well as a contrast agent in MRI scans. There are tests that do point to that use of the berry may bring down the proliferation of experimental leukemia cells in the laboratory.

Now that the plant is being cultivated, sufficient quantities of the seeds are kept away for planting in new groves or replenish damaged or destroyed tress. The seeds are repeatedly ground up to make feed for horses and encompass part of organic soil used at some point in planting.
